The Coin Machine Historian

A retro games expert in the US is Briton Freddy Bailey, (seen on the right) some of whose 50-plus years in the coin machine industry have been spent in New Jersey, where he lives today with his family, and has a little factory where he remakes the famous video games of yesteryear. In the 1980s the coin-operated video game industry around the world was building thousands of games on a daily basis, do we ever ask ourselves where did they all go, while many thousands were scrapped, many thousands have survived, but where are they? Well, Bailey has researched this so-called mystery and the answer is "The Home Market" or the so-called "Man's Cave". You can visit Freddy Bailey at his new showroom located at 591 61st St West New York, NJ 07093. Bring a truck because once you visit, it is really hard not to leave without one of the many classic video games. Visit our About Us page to learn more about the knowledgeable Freddy Bailey and his epic Game World showroom.

Memory Lane

Since the early 1930’s through the early 1970’s street operators operated pinball games, What Happened! most coin machine historians would say, Video Games arrived, initially, that could be true, but unlike the early pinball machines that sustained their “Take” over many years in their various forms, the early video games of the late 1960s did not, when “Pong” arrived street operators bought and installed them in their thousands.

During the 1970s and 1980s video games, particularly arcade games became commercially successful. Pitfall Harry, Frogger, and Q-Bert, for example, all would become broadcast cartoons. Breakfast cereals based on Pac-Man and Donkey Kong were also available. Many home consoles would emerge to challenge Atari's dominance and claim their part of the market. By purchasing the licensing rights to most arcade games and movie tie-ins, Atari would keep the competition at bay for a few years. The Intellivision from Mattel sparked the first major commercial console battle, with arcade clones being exploited to get around licensing issues. Lady Bug and Mouse Trap (both Pac-Man clones) were successful in their own right. A fantastic adaptation of Nintendo's arcade blockbuster Donkey Kong would be included on the ColecoVision. During the 1980s the gaming industry continued to expand at a breakneck pace. Check out our Memory Lane Page to learn more on the rise of the Classic Arcade Game.
